CAPABLE in Action: Sitrena's Story of Aging with Independence
What does it take to help older adults remain safely and independently in the homes they love? Sometimes, it starts with listening, understanding their challenges and working together to find solutions that make everyday life a little easier.
Sitrena Kelly's experience with the CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place – Advancing Better Living for Elders) program is a wonderful example of the difference this approach can make.
As shared in a recent story by Jewish Family Services in Richmond, Virginia, Sitrena participated in the four-month CAPABLE program, working alongside occupational therapist Tomeeker Gary and registered nurse Belinda Hensley. Together, they identified challenges in her home, discussed her priorities and developed solutions tailored to her individual needs.
Safety was one of Sitrena's biggest concerns. Through the program, her home received several important improvements, including grip strips and motion-activated lights on the stairs, handrails on her deck and outdoor steps, and support bars to make getting in and out of the shower easier.
But the benefits extended beyond the physical improvements. Sitrena especially appreciated being included in the process and having a team that listened to her concerns rather than simply telling her what she needed.
That collaborative approach helped her feel heard, respected and more confident in making decisions about her own health and home.
Today, Sitrena is looking ahead with renewed confidence. She's excited to spend more time in her garden and is even working toward a goal of getting back on her motorcycle!
Her story illustrates what makes CAPABLE so impactful. By combining nursing, occupational therapy and home modifications, the program addresses the challenges that can make aging at home difficult. Most importantly, it puts the older adult at the center of the process, focusing on individual goals and what matters most to each participant.
At Care Synergy and the CAPABLE National Center, we are proud to advance this innovative approach to helping older adults age safely, independently and with dignity. Every person's goals are different, but the opportunity to remain in the home and community they love is something worth supporting.
