Celebrating Life, One Dance At A Time

What does it mean to celebrate life when someone is living with a serious or life-limiting illness?

At Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, we believe it means meeting people where they are and helping them experience as much connection, meaning and joy as possible.

Recently, Pikes Peak Hospice volunteer Phil Brown brought that philosophy to life at Liberty Heights Assisted Living, where he hosted a “Dance Your Ability” session for residents.

The concept is simple and powerful: Everyone can move. Everyone can participate. And everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy that comes from music, movement and being together.

For some residents, dancing might mean standing and moving across the floor. For others, it might mean moving their arms from a chair, tapping their feet, swaying to the music or simply enjoying the rhythm. There is no right or wrong way to dance. The goal is to celebrate each person's abilities and create an experience that is accessible, joyful and meaningful.

Hospice Care Is About More Than Illness
Since 1980, Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care has supported thousands of patients and families through the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges that come with serious and life-limiting illness.

That support goes beyond managing symptoms. Hospice care is about caring for the whole person and helping patients and families make the most of the time they have together.

Sometimes, that means providing comfort and compassionate clinical care. Sometimes, it means supporting a family through a difficult conversation or helping someone find peace. And sometimes, it means bringing a little music and movement into someone's day.

Phil's “Dance Your Ability” session is a wonderful example of what that can look like.

Finding Joy in the Moment
Living with a serious illness can bring many changes and limitations. But those changes don't take away a person's need for joy, connection, creativity and community.

Activities like dance can create a sense of freedom and self-expression while encouraging people to connect with others. They can bring back memories, inspire smiles and create moments that are worth celebrating.

Most importantly, they remind us that a person is more than their diagnosis or illness.

At Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, we are honored to walk alongside patients and families during some of life's most challenging moments. We also believe in celebrating the moments of laughter, connection and joy that make life meaningful.

Whether it's through dance, music, conversation, a favorite activity or simply sharing time with another person, there are many ways to celebrate life.
And sometimes, all it takes is a little music and the invitation to dance.

We are grateful to Phil Brown for sharing his time and bringing his “Dance Your Ability” program to the people we serve. His volunteer service is a beautiful demonstration of our mission in action.
