CAPABLE Summer 2026 Newsletter Highlights Real-Life Impact, New Research, and Resources for Aging in Place
Success Stories and Evidence Continue to Demonstrate How CAPABLE Helps Older Adults Live Safely and Independently at Home
The Summer 2026 CAPABLE Newsletter showcases the life-changing impact of person-centered care while highlighting new research, industry recognition, and resources designed to strengthen CAPABLE programs nationwide.
One of the newsletter's featured stories follows a 92-year-old woman who entered the CAPABLE program after experiencing frequent falls, severe pain, and increasing difficulty managing daily activities in her home. Living with neuropathy and osteoarthritis, she faced significant challenges that threatened her independence and quality of life.
Working together, a CAPABLE occupational therapist, registered nurse, and handyperson addressed both her physical and emotional needs. Through medication adjustments, adaptive equipment, home modifications, and ongoing support, the participant experienced dramatic improvements. By the end of the program, she was no longer falling, reported significantly less pain, felt safer navigating her home, and successfully achieved four of her six personal goals.
Her story reflects the core mission of CAPABLE: helping older adults remain safe, independent, and confident in their own homes. The newsletter also highlights growing national attention on aging in place. Recent articles from UCHealth Today and Money Magazine underscore the importance of coordinated care, home modifications, and community-based support programs in helping older adults maintain independence and stability.
In addition, newly published research in the Journal of Applied Gerontology continues to build evidence for CAPABLE's effectiveness. The study, "Saving Healthcare Costs in the Real-World: Implementation of CAPABLE in Population-Based Care," found that CAPABLE can improve outcomes while reducing healthcare expenditures, reinforcing its value as an evidence-based model for aging services.
Readers will also find resources for strengthening local CAPABLE programs, including implementation tools, partnership-building strategies, workforce support recommendations, and guidance on leveraging key observances such as Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, National Senior Citizens Day, and Falls Prevention Awareness Week.
As communities across the country seek innovative solutions to support healthy aging, CAPABLE continues to demonstrate how coordinated, home-based interventions can empower older adults to achieve their goals and maintain independence.
