A Final Salute: Honoring a Veteran’s Service with Dignity and Compassion

At Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, a meaningful outdoor pinning ceremony brought together family, fellow veterans, and caregivers to celebrate a life of service—ensuring one Army Veteran’s final moments reflected honor, gratitude, and the mountains he loved

Honoring service at the end of life is a profound privilege. Recently, the family of an Army Veteran receiving care at the Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care Inpatient Care Center requested a veteran recognition ceremony for their loved one before his passing.

At the family’s request, our team coordinated an outdoor ceremony so the patient could face the mountains he loved. With great care, our CNAs brought his bed outside and positioned him to take in the view.

With local veterans in attendance, Chaplain Jodi led the Veteran Pinning Ceremony with honor and compassion. She presented a red, white, and blue blanket in recognition of his service—a symbol of gratitude and a heartfelt “hug” from the community. The veterans respectfully placed the blanket and pinned the patient.

A short time later, Military Chaplain Tim Pettigrew and his wife arrived. Chaplain Pettigrew offered a prayer, and the ceremony concluded with a final salute from the three veterans—an emotional tribute to a life of service and sacrifice.

Moments like these reflect the heart of our mission: honoring each person’s life story with dignity, respect, and compassion.
